Trail Work!

So many of you ask for these opportunities. We just got word or this one. I hope you can make it.

Medicine Wheel is holding a trail building day in Palmer Park on this Saturday morning, July 10, at 8:00 AM to approximately noon. Please meet at the Yucca Flats parking lot.

The project will include a new re-route of some trails in the park, plus maintenance on existing trails. Palmer Park needs some help and we just received permission from City Parks to go ahead with the next project there.

If you plan to be there, please RSVP via email to me, jim@medwheel.org, so we can have enough tools and supplies available.

How to Fix a Flat Tire

I thought this might be helpful to some of you. Local Pro Kelli Emmett provided a clinic on fixing a flat tire last year that was really helpful.

Socks

We have WMBA socks available for $5. Unfortunately we only have L/XL (men sizes 9-12 and women 10-13) for sale as we are waiting for smaller sizes to appear. They seem to fit ladies with a shoe size of 9.

See Hillary if you are interested in a pair.

* My husband even bought a pair and sports them everywhere.

June 21st at 6 pm — Colorado Cyclist

Katie Compton, 2009 US Cyclocross National Champion, is offering WMBA members a “Ride Ready Clinic” tonight (Monday, June 21st) at 6 pm. THIS FRIDAY!

We are pleased to offer another clinic offered by Jenny Skorcz and Giant for Women this Friday at 5:30 at Bear Creek Terrace. Come join us!

The clinic will be 90 minutes and we will learn to assess our posture, build strength, and flexibility to support our posture, and apply this knowledge on the trails at the park. This workshop will benefit both strong beginners and advanced riders, and is especially useful for those riders who experience chronic muscle soreness, trail fear, or have isues with balance.

Giving Back

So often we focus on riding and having fun that we don’t realize it takes hard work and getting dirty to make the trails that we enjoy.

Many of you asked about trail work opportunities and this Saturday is the first opportunity available.

Details are below. Please RSVP to info@wmbacos.org by June 9th.

Captain Jacks Trail Workday – Saturday June 12, 2010

Participants - CMTRA, USFS, Colo Springs City Parks, Medicine Wheel, and WMBA

2 shifts: 9am -12 1 pm – 3pm , (One shift is all we request)

Lunch provided for both shifts about Noon.

Some prizes to raffle off.

Location
– Lower Captain Jacks trailhead near Tunnel 1 on Gold Camp Rd. Consider carpooling in, parking space may be limited.

Work Planned – Reroute trail around some private property. The private land owner will no longer allow the trail to cross his property. We will build 1000 feet of new trail to go around the private property. The trail on the private property will eventually be closed so this new trail needs to be completed to keep the lower portion of Captain Jacks open! This new trail is flagged and ready to be built.

We will be working on a steep south(hot) facing slope to build this new trail. There is thick brush including yucca plants so dress accordingly. Work will be done by hand with picks, mattocks, McLeod’s, Pulaski’s, saws etc. We will supply the tools.

We will hike in about ½ mile up a steep drainage to get to the work area. We each need to carry 1-2 tools in. If you do wish to ride a dirt bike or mountain bike in by way of the trail you may. We may ask you to bring a tool in on your bike. You will have to leave your bike just off the main trail, we will not be able to provide security for your bike.

Bring – work clothes(shorts discouraged), good boots, gloves, enough water, snacks, sunscreen.

We plan to have a Port-a-Potty at the trailhead.

In summary this will be a strenuous but very rewarding work half day. With about 40 volunteers we should be able to complete this new trail and keep Captain Jacks open.

Please RSVP to your club’s point of contact – CMTRA, Medicine Wheel or WMBA.
