The Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments (PPACG) is seeking volunteers to collect bicycle and pedestrian traffic data on area trails and bicycle lanes in mid-September.

PPACG, in cooperation with the City of Colorado Springs, has developed a volunteer-based data collection program to record bicycle and pedestrian traffic on trails and bicycle lanes around the region. This count program will collect valuable data to help quantify the level of usage of the region’s bicycle and pedestrian transportation facilities. This data can be used to determine existing use and estimate future demand as well as help identify and prioritize project needs and limited resources to fund bicycle and pedestrian projects.

Volunteers are needed for two-hour data collection shifts at 12 locations around the region on:

· Saturday, September 11th from 9 – 11 a.m.

· Wednesday, September 15th from 7 – 9 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 5 – 7 p.m.

Please visit PPACG’s Regional Bicycle/Pedestrian Traffic Count Program web page at http://www.ppacg.org/transportation/bike-ped-counts to sign up online for a volunteer shift or for more information on the project.

Any given weekend in C. Springs there is something bike related to do. Sometimes all you have to choose from are group rides and other times there are multiple events and festivals. This is one such weekend. Get your planner, smart phone, or be prepared to write on your palm. You wont want to miss these!

Saturday:

Urban Peak Community Ride

1st I encourage you to join Urban Peak employees and clients on a bike ride through downtown. They are in the developing stages of a bike program for homeless youth in our fine city. From what I hear they want to start with obtaining bikes for transportation purposes and expand to entertainment and lifestyle purposes.

This Saturday at 9:30am they will be taking the youth on a bike ride. They will start from the shelter, put in a few miles, then come back to the shelter and anyone who’s interested in seeing the shelter, talking about the program(s) more, exploring the possibilities for our bike program, and discussing our needs as of right now.

If you plan on going and have an extra bike please bring it as they need them for the youth. Also, if you have helmets and extra locks to donate they would be appreciative of that.

This is an organization I feel deeply about and hope you find interest in the cause. See Urban Peak for more information about the organization and the location of the shelter.

Ecofestival

The Pikes Peak EcoFestival returns for its second year of bringing together environment, community and history to benefit Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site.

The mission of the Pikes Peak EcoFestival is to educate and inspire the Pikes Peak Region to live more sustainably. The event includes eco-conscious exhibitors, live music, family activities, workshops, beer garden, local food, an eco-auto display and more. Families will enjoy activities, entertainment and a Family Comfort Area. Activities include gymnastics on the lawn with 8th Street Aerials Gymnastics, live music, performing artists and entertainment. Local art organizations will lead children in eco or recycled art projects in the Eco Art Tent sponsored by the Bee Vradenburg Foundation. A Family Comfort Area with changing tables and a discrete nursing area will be on hand as well.

The Pikes Peak EcoFestival is southern Colorado’s outdoor, eco-focused community festival and benefit for Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site. Last year, the Pikes Peak EcoFestival raised more than $2,000 for the local living history ranch. Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site is an educational, non-profit living history farm and museum depicting life in the Pikes Peak region throughout four different time periods.

Admission is $4 and 12 and under is free.

Bonus! There will be a bike valet. So ride your bike and have it parked for free in a safe place.

SUNDAY!!!!

Sunday is the big day. Don’t miss a unique opportunity to ride up America’s mountain, Pikes Peak. The ride starts at 7:00 at Memorial Park in Manitou Springs. Registration is still open for Assault on the Peak. In fact you can register the day of the event from 5:30 until 6:30 AM. See the web site for more information. 2010 Assault on the Peak

WMBA will have a tent representing our amazing organization at the start/finish line. Please come and visit with us and bring a friend to learn more about our organization. You can pick up your shirt and buy a pair of socks.
